How long does it take for canine thyroid tablets to take effect?

thyroid
Vicky asked:

My 6-year-old Cocker Spaniel has a T4 thyroid level of 0.6 so he’s been put on 0.5 thyroxine daily. How long until I see a noticeable improvement in his skin, ears and behaviour (slight aggressive tendency)? Is this an ‘overnight fix’ like human hormones can be, or will it take a while to build up in his system?

  1. it has to build up…this is a forever problem…good luck

  2. i’d say about 24hours.
    Hope This Helps! :D

  3. It can take up to a few weeks before you see real results.

The hormone level need to adjust to the new meds and then you will see a difference.

It will not be a overnight fix at all.

  4. My westie is on the same thing.

2 weeks is what it took fo him(give or take).

    Hope your doggy gets better.

  5. My cocker mix is on .06 a day. She gets half a pill in the morning and half at night.

You’ll notice a change in the energy level in a day or so. The coat takes time.

You’ll also have to revisit your vet for more blood work in about a month to see if the level is correct.

My experience with Levothyroxine and/or Soloxane has all been very positive.

  6. overnight fix doesn’t exist,i’ve been on thyroid pills for years now and it took them about 2 weeks till they started working at first

  7. it is approximately the same in dogs as humans around 6 – 9 months you should notice a difference but only once his dose is kept in line with his blood results.
