Your thyroid is underactive. The Synthroid will balance out the hormone level to make up for the lack of activity from your thyroid. You may end up having an ultrasound (totally painless) to check out the size of the thyroid and whether there are any nodules/growths on it. Often, Synthroid will lessen any growths. Make sure to take it as directed. Try to avoid calcium (milk, yoghurt, etc.) for a couple of hours after taking it. Calcium lessens Synthroid's effectiveness. At least, that's what my endocrinologist said! Also, if it was your general practitioner and not an endocrinologist, I'd suggest seeing a specialist. My GP took me off Synthroid when my levels regulated, then they rose again. There is no cure for hypothyroid, so never stop taking the Synthroid.

The thyroid gland in an important contributor to regulate our bodies including metabolism. It does effect other areas like sex drive, moods, skin issues, bowel issues, and many more. People with untreated hypothyroidism often have headaches. I recommend you to research this because this disease is not something you want to take lightly. You want to get your thyroid test results and look at your numbers carefully. Although they say for TSH the upper range is 5.5 ask most people with this at 3 and 4 they notice that they are not "normal". Many endocrinologists believe that anything above TSH 2 is not normal and needs to be treated. Do your research and see where you stand. Your labwork has to be repeated to see if you are improving on Synthroid. I recommend you to read books and online articles about thyroid diseases. You can also ask for an antibody test and see if you have high level of TPO (thyroid peroxidase) an antibody your body developed against your thyroid. If your numbers are higher than 30 you have an autoimmune thyroid disease - which is pretty common especially among women. If you do not have high levels of antibodies, you are just hypothyroid. In both cases you need medicine to supplement the hormone that your body does not produce. Synthroid is the synthetic hormone for the T4 thyroid hormone. This is one option that most doctors prescribe first. There are other options. You can ask for Armour thyroid which is made out of pig thyroid hormone and includes all the T hormones that you need (T4, T3, T2, T1) which seem to work better for most of the people who tried both. You want to read about this and see if you have the sympotms that accompany this disease or just abnormal test results. Living with hypothyroidism is a challange and you want to educate yourself about it as much as you can. It is possible to regulate your thyroid levels with good medicine and live well with the disease but it requires some work on your part. Whatever happens, do not give up and get on the best medicine that is the best for you, and find the best doctor who undestands you the most. Often this disease is for life which really scared me at the beginning when I was diagnosed. Then I overcome this and did not let the thyroid problem be bigger than me! So now I am in control and although I have a thyroid disease - thyroid disease does not have me. I wish you good luck and health!

Thyroid gland is one of our body endocrine glands....... The function of this gland is to produce and secrete thyroid hormone....

Thyroid hormone is important in regulation of human body metabolism. And it is also imporatant to regulate the level of Calcium in the blood.

Abnormal thyroid test can be diagnosed as Thyrotoxicosis ( increase function ). reason for thyrotoxicosis maybe tumor of the gland, radiaton etc.

decrease function = hypothyroidism.

Synthroid = supplemental therapy in decreased function of thyroid gland.

function of synthroid = increases metabolic rate of body tissues, which is need for normal growth and maturation.

Your thyroid gland is one of the endocrine glands, which make hormones to regulate physiological functions in your body. The thyroid gland manufactures thyroid hormone, which regulates the rate at which your body carries on its necessary functions. The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, below the larynx (voice box) and just above your clavicles (collarbones). It is shaped like a "bow tie," having two halves (lobes): a right lobe and a left lobe joined by an "isthmus.". You can't always feel a normal thyroid gland.
Diseases of the thyroid gland are very common, affecting millions of Americans.

It means you either have hypothyroidism which is treated medically . If there is an insufficient production of thyroid hormone treatment will be given in pill form which can be taken daily. Hyperthyroidism is also treated by medical means but may recquire surgery to remove the thyroid gland. Seeing that the doctor gave you pills to take i gather that you have hypothyroidism.
